You have installed the application using your preferred method, now it is time to start it.
When you begin your application, you will be prompted with two options.
Select Sign In because you have already created an account for your subscription. The system will do that. You CANNOT create an account on our server using the create account option in the mobile app.
The element apps default to matrix.org. This is the matrix community server. We have our own private matrix server on matrix.m8chat.au, so you need to check with every login to ensure that you have the correct matrix server.
Your login will fail if you do not have the correct matrix server.
The element app, by default, has multiple ways to log in. We ONLY use a username.
Because M8Chat manages your subscription, we only allow usernames to be used so we can validate that you are still an allowed member.
Steps:
You will need to validate the device when you use the element app on the phone or on the desktop. This is for security and encryption. If you cannot validate the device, you will NOT be able to see the encrypted rooms and messages.
When you set up your application for the first time, you will be prompted to create an ad Recovery phrase or key. This key is unique to you and unique for the decryption of the information.
Choose your prefert option.
To get started on a chat, you have to send an invite (direct message). You can use the search icon on the top of your screen to find users.
The way the application works is that each chat is a room; if you want to chat with one or more friends, you invite them, creating a room.
It is up to the recipient of the invite to accept or decline it.
We will, by default, make you a member of:
Sending a direct message allows you to search for a member and send them a message. The message functions as an invite to connect.
The recipient(s) can accept or decline the message. If the invite is declined than you are not able to contact that member directly again.
We implemented a room directory to make it easier to find where you want to go.
It lists the “public” rooms. If a room is set to private, it will not be listed in the directory, and you can only join by invitation only.
For example M8Chat Development is set to private, you will not be able to join that room other than by invite.
