When should I use this method?
You should follow this procedure when.
- Set up your account for FIRST-time usage of m8chat.
- Do not have a mobile or desktop handy.
We have noticed that it is easier to log into https://chat.m8chat.au when you start off because you will be required to enter security phrases, etc. It is just easier to do that on a desktop/web application.
Click Sign In
When your enter the url https://chat.m8chat.au you get the above screen.
Click on Sign in to start.
Check Homeserver
This is important, you MUST ensure that the homeserver is matrix.m8chat.au, if it is not your login will not work.
Enter Username or Email Address
Enter the Username you used normally to login and the password you used to register with us.
Click Sign In
If you entered all your details, then click Sign in this will log you into the element front end.
OPTIONAL check unverified sessions
This is an OPTIONAL step, you can do it later or not at all.
This gives you an overview of the sessions, you can check if it was you. You have the option to terminate those sessions.
IMPORTANT -Setup Recovery
The following steps are IMPORTANT, MAKE SURE YOU WRITE THINGS DOWN.
We setting your encryption keys, without it you will NOT be able to retrieve your messages that are encrypted.
Select Enter a Security Phrase
It is best to use a Security Phrase, it be something you remember. You need to enter this everytime you login via a new device.
When selecting your security phase you need to consider the following, otherwise the system does not allow you to use it.
- The phrase must not be able to identify you, so using your name, phone number or email etc will not work.
- Make it long enough and something you remember.
Enter and Confirm
The following steps are IMPORTANT, MAKE SURE YOU WRITE THINGS DOWN.
Enter your unique Security Phrase and then confirm it.
Save your Security Key
This is a system generated key, you can use it to recover your messages should you forget your phrase. Select copy or download.
Store it in a safe place.
You are done
You are finished, you now have configured your account on our homeserver.
You now can:
- Ensure your messages are encrypted.
- You can login in secured areas.
- You can join encrypted room.
You should now download the Element Desktop app and/or Element mobile app, then use the login credentials you created.
Which are;
- M8Chat username
- M8Chat password
- Security Phrase
What happens next?
All your messages and history on your devices will now be encrypted when you log in.
