Reset Your Password

Forgot your password, locked out of the chat app, or just want to change it? Pick your scenario below.

Which situation are you in?

  • Scenario 1: I forgot my password (can’t log in anywhere)
  • Scenario 2: I can log in to m8chat.au but not the chat app
  • Scenario 3: I just want to change my password

Scenario 1: Forgot Password Completely

You can’t log in to m8chat.au or the chat app. Here’s how to reset.

Click “Lost your password?”

Enter the email address you registered with

Click “Get New Password”

Check your email (including the spam folder) for the reset link

Click the link and set a new password

Your new password automatically syncs to the chat system (matrix.m8chat.au) within a couple of minutes. No need to reset it separately.

Scenario 2: Can Log in to Website but Not the Chat App

You can log in to m8chat.au, but Element or the mobile app won’t accept your password.

Log in to https://m8chat.au

Go to Member DashboardManage Membership

Click “Change Password”

Enter your current password, then your new password twice

Click “Change Password”

The new password syncs to the chat system automatically. Give it 1–2 minutes, then try logging in to the chat app again.

Scenario 3: Just Want to Change Your Password

Follow the same steps as Scenario 2 above. Log in to m8chat.au, go to Manage Membership, and change your password from there.

After Changing Your Password

Your new password works on all M8Chat services:

  • m8chat.au (the website)
  • chat.m8chat.au (Element Web)
  • Element X mobile app
  • Element Desktop

You may need to log in again on existing devices after a password change.

Your encryption keys and messages are NOT affected by a password change. Everything stays intact.

What to Do If Something Goes Wrong

“I never received the reset email”

Check your spam or junk folder. Make sure you’re using the email from your original signup. Try again after 5 minutes. Still nothing? Email info@m8chat.au.

“I don’t remember which email I used”

Contact info@m8chat.au with your username and we’ll help you find it.

“I changed my password but still can’t log in to the app”

Three things to check: (1) Make sure the homeserver is set to matrix.m8chat.au. (2) Wait 2 minutes for the sync to complete. (3) Force-close and reopen the app.

“I can’t log in to m8chat.au OR the chat app”

Use Scenario 1 (forgot password) to reset via email. If that doesn’t work either, contact info@m8chat.au and we’ll sort it out.

Once your password is working, head back to the setup guide for whichever app you’re using: Element Web, Element X Mobile, or Element Desktop.
